Thailand: Visa-Free Stay Reduced to 30 Days from September 2026

Important update for tourists and long-stay visitors

As of 15 September 2026, Thailand has reduced its visa-free stay from 60 days to 30 days for eligible passport holders from 60 countries and territories, including most western Countries.

Can You Extend Your 30 Days Stay?

Yes. Eligible visitors can apply for an extension of up to another 30 days at a local Thai Immigration office. The standard application fee is 1,900 THB. Approval is at the immigration officer’s discretion, so an extension is not guaranteed.

This means that a visitor may potentially stay for up to 60 days in total without obtaining a tourist visa in advance.

What About Visa Runs?

A visa run means leaving Thailand and returning to obtain a new visa-exempt entry. However, this is not a guaranteed way to extend your stay indefinitely.

Under the revised rules, visa-exempt entries through land-border checkpoints are generally limited to two times per calendar year for most eligible nationalities. Immigration officers may also question repeated entries, particularly when they appear to be used for long-term residence rather than tourism.

Do not assume that a short trip to a neighboring country automatically guarantees another 30-day stay. Entry remains subject to immigration approval and the applicable rules.

Staying Longer than 30 Days in Thailand

If you plan to spend several months in Thailand, consider applying for an appropriate visa before traveling. Depending on your circumstances, options may include:

  • Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa (TR): For eligible travelers who plan to visit Thailand for up to 6 month. However, with this visa, you have to do a Visa Run very 60 days to get another 60 days allowance until the visa expires after 180 days (6 month).
  • Non-Immigrant Visa: For purposes such as retirement, family or other qualifying activities.

Check the current requirements with a Thai embassy or consulate before making travel plans.

Official Information

Bottom line: From 15 September 2026, plan for 30 visa-free days, with a possible 30-day extension. Visa runs are not a reliable substitute for the appropriate visa if you intend to stay in Thailand long-term.

Immigration rules and individual decisions can change. Always verify the latest requirements before traveling.
